Use

PIP-1AN/0,375A box is intended for use in fire alarm systems (FAS) as part of a cable assembly. It is characterised by straight or angular (90 degrees) laying of the signal line.

Cable assemblies composed of a fire box and a cable with fastening ensure the continuity of electricity supply or signal transmission for the time required to activate and operate fire protection devices. According to DIN 4102-12:1998, PIP-1AN/0,375A boxes are classified in the electrical function maintenance class E90.

Construction

The PIP-1AN/0,375A box consists of two parts: a cover and a base (octagonal shape), which are connected together with two screws. The PIP-1AN/0.375A box allows you to connect and branch cables with 2 cores, cross-section up to and including 4 mm2. It allows you to connect one wire via a single-acting fuse. It has 3 entries enabling the introduction of a cable with a diameter of 7-19 mm and 2 entries (from the ground side) enabling the introduction of a cable with a maximum diameter of 10 mm.

The PIP-1AN/0,375A box is made of sheet metal covered with red powder paint. There are special rivet nuts on the box cover that allow the W2 internal signaling device to be mounted directly on the box. There is also a hole in the box cover to allow the cable to be led out to the signaling device mounted on the cover. The side walls of the base have graduated chokes inserted from the top and made of flame-retardant material. Gradation allows you to adjust the hole to the required cable diameter (7-19 mm). Three ceramic cubes with 2 current paths (terminals) each are attached directly to the base of the box. Access to internal connections and the fuse is limited by a metal cover. There is an embossment under the ceramic cubes, which is intended to increase the mechanical strength of the box during a fire, as well as to equalize the height of the inserted cable with the terminals of the ceramic cubes. The box has separate terminals for connecting the signal line input, separate ones for connecting the signal line output and separate ones for connecting a signalling or other device via a fuse (90° branching). The base of the box also has a place for grounding connection, mounting holes and chokes made of flame-retardant material enabling the introduction of cables (10 mm) from the ground side.

Operating design

The main task of the PIP-1AN/0,375A boxes is to maintain the continuity of electricity supply or signal transmission in fire conditions (maintaining line continuity) after burning (damage) of the signaling device or other receiver connected to the installation through the box and preventing the signaling devices from being eliminated from operation (or other devices) located outside the fire zone. Through the PIP-1AN/0,375A box, devices such as: signaling devices (e.g. SA-K series, P8 series - without synchronization), loudspeakers of wired broadcast systems (DSO), smoke vents, etc. can be connected to the FAS installation.

Opening

To open the box, unscrew the screws in the cover (the screws are equipped with special rubber washers that prevent them from falling out of the cover after unscrewing). Then slide the cover and base apart.

Closing

To close the box, align the base and cover and then tighten the screws.

Assembly recommendations

Mounting holes located in the base of the box enable mounting to the wall or ceiling using steel expansion sleeves and mounting screws. The installation of PIP-1AN/0,375A boxes should be performed in accordance with the provisions included in the National Technical Assessment issued for the product by CNBOP-PIB.

Additional information

There is also a "Distribution" version available (PIP-1AN/Distribution), which is identical in structure and connection options to the PIP-1AN/0,375A box, differing only in the lack of a fuse.

On request, it is possible to make the box in white and with a different fuse value than the standard one. The feasibility and cost of execution are confirmed by an individual offer upon request, which should include the type and value of the fuse and/or the color of the box.

If you need to purchase additional screws/washers to mount the cover, two sets are available:

  • Set 1 – for boxes PIP-1AN, PIP-2AN, PIP-2AN/Distribution/3conductors/4mm2, PIP-2AN/Junction/6x4mm2, PIP-2AN/Junction/9x4mm2, PIP-3AN, PIP-5A, PIP-7A
  • Set 2 – for boxes PIP-2AN/Distribution/3conductors/6mm2, PIP-2AN/Junction/9x6mm2

Each set includes a set of elements for mounting covers on 10 pieces of boxes. Additionally, it is possible to purchase chokes separately.

It is not allowed to make any changes to the box structure by third parties (e.g. replacing the fuse). Any modifications result in the loss of the manufacturer's warranty and invalidation of the documents issued by CNBOP-PIB..

Does the synchronization line have to be run through the box?

There are no specific guidelines/requirements on this topic.

Is it possible to replace the fuse in the box yourself?

There is no such possibility. Any violation of the box structure will void the warranty.

Can I order a can in a color other than red?

You can, apart from the red color, we most often make white boxes.

Is an Certificate of Approval required for PIP boxes?

Approval Certificates are issued by CNBOP-PIB for compliance with the Polish standard or an annex to the regulation of the Ministry of Interior and Administration [1]. Installation boxes are not covered by the Polish standard (certified based on DIN 4102-12:1998). They are also not included in the annex to the above-mentioned. regulation.

Due to the above, an Approval Certificate is not required for PIP boxes.

Can PIP boxes be installed flush-mounted?

PIP fire protection installation boxes cannot be installed flush-mounted. Detailed information on the assembly method is available in the National Technical Assessment CNBOP-PIB-KOT-2019/2024/0113-3704 edition 1, which is available for download from the website.

Does an alarm device have to be placed on the PIP-AN box?

No, an alarm device is not required to be placed straight on the box. It is essential though that an alarm device could be connected through the box to the FAS installation.

How does the PIP-1AN/0,375A box differ from the PIP-2AN/0,375A box?

The PIP-1AN and PIP-2AN boxes differ in the type of cable entry/extraction and the arrangement of ceramic cubes. The PIP-1AN box is additionally designed to mount the signaling device on the box cover. The PIP-2AN box does not allow the signaling device to be mounted on the box cover.

Additionally, the PIP-2AN box is available in a version enabling the connection of cables (through box) and a version enabling the connection of cables with a cross-section of 6 mm2.

Can the customer have the fuse value selected for the PIP box?

No, there is no such possibility. When placing an order, the customer should specify the type and value of the fuse, e.g. 1A slow-blow fuse.

Is it required to apply PIP boxes in FAS installations?

In case of designing FAS installations it is necessary to consider legal requirements. The legal act which implies the necessity of applying fire resistant cable junction boxes is:

The Regulation by Minister of Infrastructure of April 12, 2002 concerning technical conditions with which buildings and their location shall comply (Journal of Laws No. 75, item 690 as amended).

§ 187.3. Conductors and cables along with mountings, which are applied in power supply and control systems for fire protection devices, shall ensure the continuity of power supply in case of fire for a demanded operation period of a fire protection device, for no less than 90 minutes though.

§ 187.4. A reduced period of the continuity of power supply is acceptable for fire protection devices, specified in section 3, to 30 minutes, for conductors and cables within the area protected with fire sprinkler system and for conductors and cables which supply power to and control smoke dampers.

In accordance with the above regulation, the connections of conductors / cables shall be carried out in such a way so that they would meet the fire resistance requirement E30 or E90 to ensure fire resistant installation. Such a connection is guaranteed by using cable junction boxes of fire resistance E30 or E90.
